ARCHITECTURE

BLINK!LAB architecture
Principal: June A. Grant

Founded: 2014.  +20 years of sustainable architecture, community design and fabrication.

At blink!LAB, our approach is based on a single principle: Design from the commitment to benefit everyone. We are a small boutique practice supported by a deep and wide network of consulting experts. This allows us to undertake a diverse range of projects from workspace to living-space to urban infrastructure.

#1 Ask: Re-Engineer Contracting. The existing process is biased towards well-established, large firms with robust marketing teams. A different approach begins with seeking and building on new relationships with those who are not typically at the table but who are close to the problem.  Beyond hosting networking sessions, create, designate, incubate and finance projects which are specifically for small firm growth while solving local problems. Let small firms determine work and scope before issuing an RFP to the wider community.

DESIGNING JUSTICE + Designing Spaces
Principals: Deanna Van Buren and Kyle Rawlins

Founded: 2015 bringing together +20 years of architecture + real estate development.

At DJDS, we attack the root causes of mass incarceration. Our work counters the societal inequities
evident in the dominant architectural models of courthouses and prisons by creating new prototypes such as peacemaking centers, mobile classrooms and re-entry housing.

#1 Ask: Access to housing and community development funding. For example, Alameda County's Tier One / Tier Two Developer Standards perpetuate the disparities between capitalized (white) and under-capitalized (black) firms. A publicly-sponsored "on ramp" that would facilitate black firms to build their own development track, without partnering, would create a more dynamic field of competitors... with benefits for all.

J&C Consulting Services
Principal: Jamie James

Founded: 2004.  +14 years of  architectural multi-media services.

The best scenario for J&C is working with the Invetors and Developers as a design consultant providing conceptual content: vignettes and charettes for commercial and capital  design build and TI projects!

#1 Ask:  Start projects by allowing small firms to review all plans and materials to define their own scope of work from the design plan and work schedule first. Prioritizing First Review will present an opportunity to negotiate the scope and fees with contingency clauses when officially contracted. Secondly, revise all accounting and accounts receivables to pay small firms within 7 business days when they're contracted as associates or sub-consultants under primes.

MWA Architects
Principal: Carlton Smith, FAIA, NOMAC

Founded: 1988.  +41 years of Bay Area architecture, design + planning.

Founded as a minority-owned firm, an remains so today. We are over 50% minority-owned, 39% of our technical staff members are women and 24% are minorities. Our diversity is our strength. It allows us to understand, empathize, and communicate with people whose experiences differ from our own — this is essential in working with the variety of communities we engage with.

We approach design inclusively. Informed by our history, we embrace social equity as a foundation of sustainable design.  From housing to civic infrastructure, we are committed to designing built environments that strengthen our communities, and consider the health and well-being of the planet.

#1 Ask:  An unbiased project selection process.

CONSTRUCTION

Construction Service Workers
Principal: Wanda Rogers

Founded: 2006

The first African American Woman Owned Construction Staffing Agency with that discipline.

#1 Ask:  Inclusion for African American Business, local hire requirements along with removing the barriers for past performance bonding and insurance.   I have created a Mentor Protege Program in San Diego to help assist with this effort however, we have less than 10 Businesses in the construction arena here, with a less than desirable need to do public agency work because of the documents that are required again a barrier.  All, that I have acquired and done still doesn't compare in contracts or dollars!

ENGINEERING

DAVID ENGINEERING
Principal: Shawn David Coleman, PE

Founded: 2012.  +18 years of Civil Engineering, Utility Engineering and Construction Management.

DAVID uses State of the Art Technology with virtual remote access capabilities to create a complete “Field to Office” delivery system. This provides instant access to all information, workflow, software and deliverables from anywhere in the State of California essentially eliminating loss of production due to location, commutes and incidentals.

#1 Ask:  Increase on-call A/E/C contracts solicited as set asides for small businesses owned by under-presented groups. On-Call Set-Asides promote growth, development, and will accomplish the goals of the program. For the small-firms and minority-owned businesses, this allows the ability to build capacity, improve familiarity with client procedures and policies; while all at a sustainable pace. For the client, On-call Contracts greatly reduce the administrative burden of the procurement process while providing greater access for under-represented firms, and additionally allow clients to size work assignments more freely without unduly administrative burden.
